Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Hypothesis

This page examines the medical, historical, and neurological hypothesis regarding Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) and Geschwind syndrome in relation to reported physical and sensory phenomena surrounding prophetic revelations in canonical Hadith collections. Each entry documents primary Islamic sources alongside medical literature correlations.

Auditory Phenomena & Ringing of Bells

Neurological literature notes that simple and complex auditory auras—such as ringing sounds or voices—can originate from focal seizures originating in Heschl's gyrus or the temporal association cortex.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2 — Ringing of Bells Auditory Phenomena & Diaphoresis

Narrated Aisha (Mother of the Faithful): Harith bin Hisham asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), "O Allah's Messenger! How is the Divine Inspiration revealed to you?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes off after I have grasped what is inspired..."

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 1, Hadith 2

Medical researchers (Freemon 1976; Landsborough 1987) note that Muhammad's description of revelation "like the ringing of a bell" followed by an altered mental state matches how auditory seizures can feel — as if a bell is ringing in the ears, produced by electrical activity in the brain's hearing centres.

Autonomic Responses & Palpitations

Temporal lobe seizures frequently engage the autonomic nervous system, leading to sudden onset of intense anxiety, panic, and severe tachycardia.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3 — Autonomic Response, Severe Heart Palpitations

Narrated Aisha: "...Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, 'Cover me! Cover me!' They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, 'I fear that something may happen to me.'"

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 1, Hadith 3

The sudden onset of intense fear, pounding heartbeat, and the urgent need to be covered match what neurologists see in seizure activity affecting the brain's emotional and autonomic centres.

Diaphoresis & Severe Sweating in Cold Weather

Autonomic hyperactivity during focal motor or complex partial seizures frequently triggers profuse sweating (diaphoresis) independent of ambient temperature.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2 — Diaphoresis & Severe Sweating in Cold Weather

Aisha added: "Verily I saw the Prophet being inspired Divinely on a very cold day and noticed the sweat dropping from his forehead as the Inspiration was over."

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 1, Hadith 2

Profuse sweating during severe cold weather is noted by medical historians as consistent with an overactive nervous system response during a seizure — the body suddenly drenches in sweat regardless of temperature.

Motor Automatisms & Rapid Lip Movement

Orofacial automatisms—including involuntary lip-smacking, chewing movements, or rapid speech muscle contractions—are documented motor signs of temporal lobe epilepsy during seizure discharge.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5 — Orofacial Automatisms & Involuntary Rapid Lip Movement

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Regarding the statement of Allah: "Move not your tongue concerning (the Quran) to make haste therewith" (Quran 75:16). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to bear the revelation with great trouble and used to move his lips (quickly) with the Inspiration.

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 1, Hadith 5

Ibn 'Abbas describes Muhammad's lips moving rapidly and involuntarily during revelation. In neurology, such uncontrolled mouth movements during an altered state are a known sign of seizure activity in the temporal lobes.

Hypersexuality & Behavior Patterns in TLE Literature

Clinical literature on interictal behavior syndrome (Geschwind syndrome) notes alterations in sexual drives, including episodes of hypersexuality or altered personality traits associated with temporal lobe lesions.

Sahih al-Bukhari 268 — Interictal Behavior & Geschwind Syndrome Hypothesis

Narrated Qatada: Anas bin Malik said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to visit all his wives in a single round during the day and night, and they were eleven in number." I asked Anas, "Had the Prophet the strength for it?" Anas replied, "We used to say that the Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men)."

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 5, Hadith 20

This narration is examined alongside neurological research on Geschwind syndrome — a set of personality and behavioural changes linked to temporal lobe epilepsy. While a reduced sex drive is more common in this condition, increased sexual activity has been documented in some cases (Waxman & Geschwind 1975).
