Violence

This page presents Quranic verses and Hadith narrations related to warfare, killing, and the use of force. Each entry is shown with its original Arabic text, an English translation, a link to the authoritative source, and a neutral, factual explanation.

Commands to Kill Disbelievers

The Quran contains multiple verses commanding believers to kill disbelievers under specific circumstances — during warfare, when treaties are broken, and in pursuit of establishing Islamic rule. These verses appear across several surahs revealed at different stages of Muhammad's prophetic career in Medina, and they form the primary scriptural basis for classical Islamic jurisprudence on armed conflict with non-Muslims.

Quran 2:191 — Kill Them Wherever You Find Them

Kill them wherever you come upon them and drive them out of the places from which they have driven you out. For persecution is far worse than killing. And do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they attack you there. If they do so, then fight them — that is the reward of the disbelievers.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse is part of a passage (2:190–194) that discusses the rules of engagement in warfare. Verse 2:190 precedes it with "Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress." The verse instructs believers to fight those who have persecuted and expelled them, and states that "fitnah" (persecution/oppression) is worse than killing.

Quran 9:5 — Kill Polytheists When Sacred Months Pass

But once the Sacred Months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, perform prayers, and pay alms-tax, then set them free. Indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Often referred to as the "Sword Verse," this is one of the most widely discussed verses in the Quran. It appears in Surah At-Tawbah (Chapter 9), which deals with the breaking of treaties by polytheist tribes. The verse instructs fighting against those who violated peace treaties, with a conditional exception if they convert to Islam (repent, pray, and pay zakat).

Quran 4:76 — Fight the Allies of Satan

“Believers fight for the cause of Allah, while disbelievers fight for the cause of ˹false gods called˺ Tāghūt. So fight against the ˹close˺ allies of Satan. Indeed, the evil scheming of Satan is ever weak.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse draws a sharp binary: believers fight for Allah, disbelievers fight for Tāghūt (a term for false gods, idols, or illegitimate authority). It then commands believers to fight the “allies of Satan” — a category that by context encompasses all non-believers. By framing the enemy as "allies of Satan," the verse provides theological justification for warfare through demonization: opponents are not merely political enemies but agents of evil.

Quran 8:39 — Fight Until Religion is All for Allah

“Fight them until there is no more persecution, and the whole religion becomes Allah˹s ˺alone˺. But if they desist, then surely Allah is All-Seeing of what they do.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

The goal stated here is not merely defensive or retaliatory: warfare is to continue until "the whole religion becomes Allah’s alone" — i.e., until Islam is the universal religion and no competing religious practice remains. The word "fitnah" (persecution) is the same term used in 2:191, where the logic is that fitnah is worse than killing. Classical commentators (al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir) interpreted this verse as a mandate for offensive jihad until polytheism is eradicated.

Quran 9:29 — Fight People of the Book Until They Pay Jizya

“Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day, nor comply with what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, nor embrace the religion of truth from among those who were given the Scripture, until they pay the tax willingly while being humbled.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Unlike 9:5 which targets polytheists, this verse specifically targets the "People of the Scripture" (Ahl al-Kitab) — Jews, Christians, and others who had received earlier revelations. The condition for ceasing hostilities is the payment of jizya (a poll tax levied on non-Muslim subjects) while in a state of submission or humiliation (saghirun). This verse became the Quranic basis for the classical Islamic institution of dhimmi status, under which Jews and Christians could live in an Islamic state but as second-class subjects paying a special tax.

Terror as a Divine Weapon

Both the Quran and canonical Hadith present terror (ru'b) as a divine weapon — a psychological force that God himself casts into the hearts of enemies to ensure Muslim victory. This concept goes beyond ordinary battlefield fear, framing terror as a direct act of divine intervention that demoralises opposing forces before or during combat.

Quran 8:12 — Allah Casts Horror into Disbelievers

˹Remember˺ when your Lord revealed to the angels, "I am with you. So make the believers stand firm. I will cast horror into the hearts of the disbelievers. So strike above their necks, and strike their fingertips."

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse appears in Surah Al-Anfal (Chapter 8), which was revealed in the context of the Battle of Badr (624 CE), the first major military engagement between the early Muslims and the Quraysh of Mecca. The verse describes God instructing the angels to support the believers and strike terror into the enemies during battle.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2977 — Victory Through Terror Cast into Hearts

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with awe (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand."

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 56, Hadith 186

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad states that he was made victorious through "ru'b" (terror/awe) cast into the hearts of his enemies. This hadith is found in the "Book of Jihad" (Fighting for the Cause of Allah) section of Sahih al-Bukhari, one of the most authoritative hadith collections in Sunni Islam.

Quran 3:151 — Allah Casts Terror into Disbelievers' Hearts

“We will cast horror into the hearts of the disbelievers for associating ˹others˺ with Allah — a practice He has never authorised. Fire will be their home — what an evil place for the wrongdoers!”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse, revealed after the Battle of Uhud (625 CE), declares that Allah himself will cast terror (ru'b) into the hearts of disbelievers as a divine punishment for polytheism. The same Arabic word ru'b appears here and in Bukhari 2977, where Muhammad says he was "made victorious through ru'b." Terror is thus presented not merely as a battlefield tactic but as a divine instrument wielded by God against those who associate partners with Him.

Quran 8:59–60 — Prepare Forces to Terrify Allah's Enemies

“Do not let the disbelievers think they are beyond ˹Allah˺˻s˺ reach. They will have no escape. Prepare against them whatever ˹military˺ forces and cavalry you can, to terrify thereby Allah˹˻s˺ enemies and your enemies as well as other enemies you do not know but Allah knows. Whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be paid back to you in full, and you will not be wronged.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Verse 8:60 is one of the most direct Quranic commands to prepare for offensive military action. The explicit purpose is to "terrify" (turhibūna) the enemies of Allah — using the same Arabic root as irhab (terrorism in modern Arabic). Classical commentators noted that the verse's command to prepare "whatever forces and cavalry you can" was understood as a general standing directive to maintain military readiness for jihad. Verse 8:59 reinforces this by warning disbelievers they cannot escape — framing the military preparation as a certainty of eventual conquest.

The Mandate and Rules of Jihad

Canonical Hadith collections record explicit commands from Muhammad regarding the obligation of armed jihad against non-believers, as well as the rules of engagement governing such warfare. These narrations — found in the most authoritative Sunni collections — define the conditions under which fighting ceases (acceptance of Islam, prayer, and payment of zakat) and set limits on conduct during battle, such as prohibitions on killing children and mutilating bodies.

Sahih al-Bukhari 25 — Fight Until They Accept Islam

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity. If they perform all that, then they save their blood and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning will be done by Allah."

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 2, Hadith 18

This hadith is one of the most frequently cited narrations regarding the relationship between faith and warfare in Islam. The Prophet states he was commanded to fight people until they accept Islam (testify to the shahada, perform prayers, and pay zakat), at which point their lives and property become protected.

Sahih Muslim 1731a — Rules of Engagement in Jihad

Narrated by Buraidah: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war; do not embezzle the spoils; do not break your pledge; do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children."

— Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Hadith 1731a

This hadith outlines rules of engagement for military campaigns. It commands fighting against disbelievers while also setting limits: prohibiting embezzlement of war spoils, treachery, mutilation of corpses, and the killing of children. It is found in Sahih Muslim, the second most authoritative hadith collection in Sunni Islam.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2853 — Reward for Keeping a Horse for Jihad

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "If somebody keeps a horse in Allah's Cause motivated by his faith in Allah and his belief in His Promise, then he will be rewarded on the Day of Resurrection for what the horse has eaten or drunk and for its dung and urine."

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 56, Hadith 69

This hadith promises divine reward not only for military service in itself but for every unit of the horse's biological functions — its eating, drinking, defecating, and urinating — all credited to the believer's scales on Judgment Day because the horse is kept for jihad. It is found in the "Book of Jihad" (Kitab al-Jihad wal-Siyar) of Sahih al-Bukhari, illustrating how extensively the doctrine of religious warfare permeated even mundane aspects of daily life in prophetic tradition.

Spoils of War & Distribution

The Quran and Hadith establish formal legal frameworks for the division and utilization of booty (ghanima) and state property (fai') acquired during military campaigns.

Quran 8:41 — Spoils of War and 20% Khums Share

"Know that whatever spoils you take, one-fifth is for Allah and the Messenger, his close relatives, orphans, the poor, and ˹needy˺ travellers..."

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Surah Al-Anfal verse 41 establishes the law of khums (the fifth-share). Following military engagements such as Badr, 20% of captured wealth, livestock, and captives was allocated to the Prophet Muhammad and state distribution, with the remaining 80% divided among participating combatants.

Quran 8:68–69 — Legality of War Booty

"Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, you would have certainly been disciplined with a tremendous punishment for whatever ˹ransom˺ you have taken. Now enjoy what you have taken, for it is lawful and good. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Revealed in the aftermath of the Battle of Badr (624 CE), these verses address the taking of captives and ransom payments. Verse 69 explicitly sanctions war spoils (ghanima) as religiously lawful (halal) and wholesome (tayyib) for the Muslim community.

Military Expeditions & Campaigns

Prophetic biography (seerah) and canonical hadith collections record the expansion of the early Medinan state through numerous military expeditions categorized as ghazwat (battles led by Muhammad personally) and saraya (expeditions led by appointed commanders).

Sahih al-Bukhari 3949 — Military Expeditions of Muhammad

Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: The Prophet (ﷺ) fought nineteen military expeditions (ghazwat) personally.

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 64, Hadith 1

Classical biographers (Ibn Ishaq, al-Waqidi) document that between the Hijrah (622 CE) and Muhammad's death (632 CE), the Medinan state engaged in 27 to 28 direct military campaigns led by Muhammad and over 60 additional military raids (saraya) dispatched under commanders, establishing political and military hegemony across the Arabian peninsula.

Conflicts with Jewish Tribes

A major sequence of military operations in Medina and the surrounding region involved conflicts with local Jewish tribes—Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir, Banu Qurayza, and the inhabitants of Khaybar.

Quran 59:2 — Siege and Expulsion of Banu Nadir

"He is the One Who expelled the disbelievers among the People of the Book from their homes during the first gathering. You never thought they would leave, and they thought their fortifications would protect them against Allah..."

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Surah Al-Hashr (Chapter 59) concerns the siege and expulsion of the Jewish tribe Banu Nadir from Medina in 625 CE. Following allegations of treason, their fortresses were besieged, their date palms burned, and their properties confiscated as state revenue (fai') without battle.

Quran 33:25–27 — Siege and Execution of Banu Qurayza

33:25: "And Allah repelled those who disbelieved, in their rage, not having obtained any good. And sufficient was Allah for the believers in battle, and ever is Allah Powerful and Exalted in Might."

33:26: "And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party [i.e., their men] you killed, and you took captive a party [i.e., the women and children]."

33:27: "And He caused you to inherit their land and their homes and their properties and a land which you have not trodden. And ever is Allah, over all things, competent."

— Saheeh International

Surah Al-Ahzab verses 25–27 describe the conclusion of the Siege of Medina (Battle of the Trench, 627 CE) and the subsequent campaign against the Jewish tribe Banu Qurayza. Verse 25 addresses the retreat of the Meccan confederates. Verses 26–27 describe the siege of Banu Qurayza's fortresses (sayasihim), the terror cast into their hearts, the execution of adult male combatants ("a party you killed"), the enslavement of women and children ("you took captive a party"), and the transfer of their lands, homes, and assets to the Muslim state.

Campaign of Khaybar — Kinana ibn al-Rabi' Execution

Narrated Anas: Following the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah (628 CE), the Muslim army marched against the fortified Jewish oasis of Khaybar. The siege resulted in the capitulation of the fortresses, the confiscation of their lands, and the execution of key leaders.

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 64, Hadith 239 & Sirah Ibn Ishaq

Prophetic biographies (Sirat Rasul Allah by Ibn Ishaq, pp. 515–517) record that Kinana ibn al-Rabi', custodian of the Banu Nadir treasury at Khaybar, was interrogated regarding hidden wealth. When he denied knowledge of its location, he was subjected to physical interrogation before being executed. Subsequently, the remaining Jewish inhabitants were permitted to cultivate the land in exchange for yielding half of their annual agricultural produce.

The Status of Disbelievers

The Quran repeatedly characterises non-believers not merely as religiously misguided but as the objects of divine wrath, eternal damnation, and cosmic contempt. Several verses describe disbelievers as the worst of all creatures, under the curse of Allah, and destined for permanent hellfire. This theological framing of the non-Muslim “other” forms a doctrinal foundation from which the combat verses in earlier sections draw their moral logic.

Quran 2:161 — Disbelievers Are Condemned by Allah

“Surely, those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers are condemned by Allah, the angels, and all of humanity.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

The curse declared here is universal and permanent: a person who dies as a disbeliever is condemned by God, all angels, and all of humanity together. This is not a conditional warning but a final verdict. Combined with 2:162 (below), it establishes that this condemnation is also eternal — there is no reprieve and no reduced punishment.

Quran 2:162 — Eternal Punishment for Disbelievers

“They will be in it forever. Their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be delayed ˹for respite˺.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

The continuation of 2:161, this verse specifies the terms of the disbeliever's punishment: eternal, undiminished, with no possibility of delay or commutation. Islamic theology holds that hellfire is an eternal destination for those who die as disbelievers, and this verse is one of its primary Quranic proofs. The absolute finality contrasts with other verses that speak of God’s mercy — demonstrating that divine mercy, in the Quran, has explicit limits defined by creedal belief.

Quran 4:48 — Shirk is the Unforgivable Sin

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating ˹others˺ with Him ˹in worship˺, but forgives anything else of whoever He wills. And whoever associates ˹others˺ with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Shirk — associating partners with Allah — is declared the one unforgivable sin. This singles out polytheists and Trinitarian Christians (for whom the doctrine of the Trinity constitutes shirk in Islamic theology) for a category of divine treatment that admits no exception: no mercy, no intercession, no redemption. All other sins, however grave, remain within the scope of Allah’s forgiveness; only the error of assigning partners to God is permanently outside it. This categorical exclusion of the world’s largest religious groups from any possibility of divine forgiveness is directly relevant to how combative verses characterise the moral status of those being fought.

Quran 8:55 — Disbelievers Are the Worst of Creatures

“Surely the worst of all creatures in the sight of Allah are those who persist in disbelief, never to have faith.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

The Arabic term sharra al-dawabb (worst of living creatures / worst of beasts) places persistent disbelievers below all other living things in the divine order. This is not a description of their actions but of their ontological status — what they are in God’s sight. The verse is located in Surah Al-Anfal, the same chapter that commands military preparation and striking terror, contextualising the dehumanisation of the enemy as part of the same theological package that justifies warfare against them.

Quran 33:64 — Allah Has Cursed the Disbelievers

“Surely Allah has condemned the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a blazing Fire.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse is among the most concise statements of divine condemnation of disbelievers in the Quran: a single sentence declaring that Allah has cursed them and prepared hellfire for them. The Arabic la'ana (cursed, condemned) carries connotations of being cast out from divine mercy. This verse appears in Surah Al-Ahzab alongside the regulations for Muhammad’s household, demonstrating how theological declarations about non-believers are woven throughout the Quran regardless of the surrounding topic.

Quran 47:3 — Disbelievers Follow Falsehood

“This is because the disbelievers follow falsehood while the believers follow the truth from their Lord. This is how Allah shows people their true state ˹of affairs˺.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse establishes a binary epistemological framework: believers follow truth, disbelievers follow falsehood (al-batil). There is no intermediate category, no possibility of a sincere disbeliever genuinely reasoning their way to a different conclusion — all non-belief is framed as following something inherently false. Surah Muhammad (Chapter 47) was revealed largely in the context of warfare, and this verse provides the theological rationale for the hostility: the enemy does not merely differ in belief but actively follows falsehood.

Quran 48:29 — Firm Against Disbelievers

“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are firm against the disbelievers and compassionate with one another.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

This verse prescribes two complementary attitudes as a defining feature of the Muslim community: hardness toward disbelievers and compassion among believers. The in-group/out-group moral distinction is thus not incidental but constitutive — being ashidda'u 'ala al-kuffar (firm/harsh/severe against disbelievers) is listed as a quality of the companions of the Prophet alongside being merciful to each other. This verse has been cited in classical jurisprudence and modern Islamist literature alike as a basis for maintaining a distinct, adversarial stance toward non-Muslims.

Quran 98:6 — Disbelievers Are the Worst of Creatures

“Indeed, those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the Fire of Hell, to stay there forever. They are the worst of ˹all˺ creatures.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Surah Al-Bayyinah (98) names two specific groups as "worst of creatures" (sharr al-bariyya): disbelieving People of the Book (Jews, Christians) and polytheists. This repeats the language of 8:55 but extends it across a broader population. The verse explicitly identifies these groups by religious identity — not by any behaviour or moral failing — and assigns them eternal hellfire and the lowest possible ontological status. The parallel verse 98:7 declares that believers are "the best of creatures"‪(khayr al-bariyya), establishing a clean binary that assigns ultimate worth entirely on the basis of creedal allegiance.

Prescribed Punishments (Hudud)

The Quran prescribes specific corporal punishments for specific offences. These punishments are known as hudud (singular: hadd), meaning "limits" or "boundaries" set by God. Because they are divinely mandated, classical Islamic jurisprudence treats them as non-negotiable: no human authority can commute, reduce, or abolish them.

Quran 5:38 — Amputation for Theft

“Cut off the hands of thieves, whether they are man or woman, as a ˹deterrent˺ punishment from Allah for what they have done. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

The command is unambiguous: amputation of the hand is the prescribed Quranic punishment for theft. Classical jurisprudence set the threshold at which this punishment applies (typically around a quarter-dinar of gold) and required strict evidentiary standards, but the punishment itself — permanent physical mutilation — is presented as divinely ordained and non-negotiable. The verse describes it as a nakalan (deterrent, exemplary punishment) from Allah, framing the severity as intentional rather than incidental.

The next verse (5:39) offers a reprieve only through repentance after the fact, which classical scholars interpreted as potentially reducing the sin in the afterlife but not reversing the earthly punishment. Several contemporary Muslim-majority countries — including Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Yemen — retain amputation as the legal penalty for theft under their application of hudud law.
